FAA Awards Funding for Projects at Two Virginia Airports
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently awarded funding for projects at Dulles (IAD) and Norfolk (ORF) International airports. The grants were announced February 15, by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) with the funding coming from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which was passed in part to address the aging infrastructure of the nation’s airports.
Dulles will receive $35 million to help with the construction of a 14-gate east concourse, 400,000 sq. ft. terminal building with connections to the Aerotrain and Metrorail. The building will include new shops, restaurants and other customer services as well as the latest aircraft-servicing technologies to accommodate future needs. This new funding comes in addition to the $70.59 million received last year for the project.
Norfolk International will receive $6 million to partially fund the construction of a new federal inspection service facility to meet the U.S. Customs and Border Protection requirements. Airport executives hope this new area will provide an easier screening process for international travelers and will also process cargo and agricultural products.
The improved facility will allow multiple aircraft to be processed at one time, enhance the flow of passenger screenings, and improve crew safety.
