Aviation Programs And Resources

The Virginia Department of Aviation provides many programs and resources supporting aviation development and promotion in the Commonwealth. These include educational programs, funding programs, aircraft registration, and airport licensing.

The Virginia Department of Aviation offers many aviation education opportunities including teacher’s grants, an art contest, scholarships, and a photo contest, as well as information on Virginia’s flight schools, aviation maintenance schools, and institutions.

Ambassador Program

The Virginia Aviation Ambassador Program encourages pilots and aviation enthusiasts to visit all Virginia’s public-use airports and aviation museums and attend safety seminars and special airport events such as fly-ins. Participants will learn more about Virginia’s excellent air transportation system, experience the beauty of the Commonwealth as they travel to each airport, and have fun.

Airport Funding Programs & Resources

The Commonwealth of Virginia maintains one of the nation’s most comprehensive and advanced statewide aviation systems. 

An integral part of DOAV’s mission is to provide funding to assist eligible airport sponsors with the planning, development, and promotion of airports. DOAV manages five funding programs to support this mission.

Virginia Flight Information Exchange

The Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV) and Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) announced on August 5 the launch of the Virginia Flight Information Exchange pilot program, a tool that will allow state and local governments to share information among unmanned aerial systems (UAS) stakeholders and address key safety and policy concerns while keeping the airspace open, secure, and integrated with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) control of the national airspace. Virginia Flight Information Exchange will ensure the Commonwealth balances both the safest and most open UAS airspace in the country.
