Virginia Aviation Scholarships
The Virginia Department of Aviation coordinates several aviation scholarships supporting aviation careers, as well as a scholarship focusing on pilot license training. Please contact DOAV for the application deadlines.

Willard G. Plentl Sr. Aviation Scholarship
The Willard G. Plentl Sr. Aviation Scholarship is awarded to a Virginia high school senior who is planning an aviation career in a non-engineering area. Non-engineering careers include, but are not limited to, pilots, aviation maintenance technicians, and aviation managers. A certification of acceptance into a non-engineering, aviation-related postsecondary education program is required. One scholarship in the amount of $3,000 will be awarded each year.
Applications must be mailed into the DOAV facility with sealed transcripts from your school. NO digital applications will be accepted.
Chad Weaver Aviation Scholarship
With the Chad Weaver Scholarship, the Virginia Department of Aviation offers residents $1,000 to complete ground school, take flight lessons, or both. This scholarship is available to people seeking their private pilot’s license or their certificed flight instrugtor’s (CFI) endorsement at a Virginia flight school. The Chad Weaver Scholarship may be used once for a private pilot’s license and once for a (CFI) endorsement.
