Registration Program for Private Airports
Owners of private use airports that are not within five miles of a public use airport are only required to register their airports with the Department of Aviation.
Private use airports, heliports, or landing areas within five miles of a public use airport must apply for a license. A one-time process takes place to provide a public review of an individual's request to build a private use airport on private property. Because the Federal Aviation Administration must approve the airspace for any airport, the Department's review and licensing requirement is part of the public review process. There is no fee to license a private use airport. The license runs concurrently with the staggered license renewal period of public use airports by geographic areas of the state according to the Virginia Aviation Board's areas of responsibility.
