Richmond - The Virginia Aviation Board funded six projects – worth a combined $1.111 million – at public-use airports across the Commonwealth during its most recent meeting. The projects ranged in size from $3,760 for an update to the stormwater pollution prevention plan at Manassas Regional Airport to $444,444 for construction of a runway extension embankment at Virginia Highlands Airport near Abingdon.

VAB Chairman Rod Hall said, “These projects are vitally important for public safety and customer service needs. And the Board takes great pride in being able to provide financial support at each of its quarterly meetings.” (The Virginia Aviation Board awards nearly $30 million annually to support the public-use airports in Virginia.)

Mark Flynn, director of the Virginia Department of Aviation, said, “While the Commonwealth doesn’t own a single airport, we have one of the best aviation systems in the nation. These public-use airports are the economic engines that enable communities to thrive and provide a most effective way of moving people and goods.”

The six projects funded at the February 20 meeting of the VAB are:

  • Virginia Highlands Airport; runway extension embankment construction; $444,444.00
  • Blue Ridge Regional Airport; Route 698 relocation and apron expansion construction; $108,657.00
  • Ingalls Field; hangar demolition and equipment building construction; $26,408.00
  • Manassas Regional Airport; stormwater pollution prevention plan update; $3,760.00
  • Danville Regional Airport; terminal building HVAC replacement; $144,800.00
  • Norfolk International Airport; runway pavement milling and overlay; $383,383.22

The VAB will meet again May 21, 2020 in the Harrisonburg area. The meeting is open to the public.

The Virginia Department of Aviation will support Virginia in being an economic development leader and a gateway to the world by improving and growing Virginia's aviation system and embracing new aviation technologies. The Department’s mission is to: 1.Develop an advanced aviation system that is safe, secure, and fosters economic development; 2. Build an appreciation by the public for the importance of aviation and to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals; and 3. Provide safe and highly efficient flight services for the Commonwealth's leadership and state agencies.
