The Flying Classroom Visits Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport

Captain Barrington Irving visits students across the nation and he aims to inspire students to achieve their dreams by sharing his story of success in the STEM+ field. The Flying Classroom is a supplemental PK-12, digital STEM+ curriculum aligned to national/state standards and based on the global expeditions of Captain Irving. Being the first black male pilot to fly solo across the world, he also recounts his expeditions and provides students with behind the scenes information about his excursions. Captain Irving's site visits motivate students to Dream, Live, and Fly!

The Flying Classroom was held at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport Friday, August 6 and more than 250 students, parents, teachers and school officials attended. The event included static displays, interactive displays and a hands-on science lesson. Aviation professionals and educators were in attendance to help connect students to future aviation opportunities.

Virginia Department of Aviation participated by bringing the PR & Education Team’s ICON A5 display. Communications and Education Director John Campbell transported, setup and took down the display. PR and Education Manager Betty Wilson staffed the table top that provided information about aviation education. PR and Education Coordinator Kim Wells presented the ICON A5 to the students and teachers to educate them about the aircraft controls as well as aviation careers. The team worked together to safely allow the attendees inside the aircraft to get a hands-on experience with the flight controls.
