Groundbreaking for Runway extension at Stafford Regional Airport

The Stafford Regional Airport will hold a groundbreaking for the extension of its runway on Monday, January 18, 2021, at 11 a.m.  The groundbreaking takes place at the airport located at 95 Aviation Way. Members of the Board of Supervisors are invited and may attend; however, due to COVID concerns, the groundbreaking is closed to the public. The project to extend the 5,000-foot runway to 6,000 feet was initiated in 2007.

When interviewed by Potomac Local News last summer, Stafford airport authority member Hank Scharpenberg advised that “By having this extension we can attract different planes to the airport, specifically more business flights that could base their planes here in Stafford which means more revenue for the airport in terms of hanger fees and fuel sales.”

The Stafford Regional Airport is responsible for $23 million in annual economic activity in the region, according to a 2017 study from the Virginia Department of Aviation.
