Winchester Regional Airport Authority Receives Brewer Award

In honor of its outstanding contributions to the advancement of youth in aerospace activities, the Winchester Regional Airport Authority has received the 2021 Frank G. Brewer Memorial Aerospace Education Award from Civil Air Patrol’s (CAP) Virginia Wing.

Established in 1959, the award serves as a memorial to Frank G. Brewer, Sr. and his lifelong interest in aviation, youth and education. The recognition is one of the highest honors that an outside organization can receive from the Civil Air Patrol. Nominees must have provided support for all facets of aerospace education over a period of five years and are evaluated on CAP program support, significance of accomplishment and community involvement.

The award commemorates over thirty years of support by the Winchester Regional Airport Authority for the Winchester Composite Squadron. The Authority has provided the provision of hangar facilities, aircraft tie downs, conference rooms, meeting areas, and direct assistance for emergency services missions involving several interstate CAP squadrons.

“We are proud to be based at the Winchester Regional Airport,” Winchester Composite Squadron Commander Major Jacob Bixler said. “Our Squadron can aspire to greater heights knowing it has the Authority as a partner in our mission to serve the community, save lives, and shape positive futures for area youths.”

The Authority already has big plans for how it can help provide support in educating youth in the future. It has committed to assisting in the planning and development of a new squadron headquarters facility.

“The work of Civil Air Patrol embodies how aviation can be used to serve the public good,” Authority Chairman Bill Pifer said. “CAP is a credit to our airport and community and we are glad to be a small part of their success.”

The award will be presented to the Winchester Regional Airport Authority Board of Directors by Virginia Wing Commander Colonel Elizabeth Sydow at its scheduled business meeting Thursday, April 14th at 5:00 p.m.
