Major Disaster Declared
The federal government issued a Major Disaster Declaration for Virginia on April 2. The declaration will aid Virginia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic by allowing state agencies, local governments and certain nonprofit agencies to purchase much-needed supplies and receive 75 percent reimbursement from the federal government. In addition, the declaration authorizes federal agencies to provide direct emergency assistance to Virginia. This declaration is in addition to the Title 32 funding already authorized to support the actions of the Virginia National Guard.
Gov. Ralph Northam had requested the disaster declaration March 30. He said, “This critical funding will support our ongoing, statewide efforts to fight this virus in our Commonwealth and keep Virginians safe.”
