International Aviation Art Contest Selects Air Sports Theme

Since 1989 the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) has hosted the International Aviation Art Contest to challenge youth to illustrate the importance of aviation through art. Demonstrating the impact of aeronautics through an interactive, fun medium such as art motivates youth of all ages to become more familiar with aeronautics, engineering and science.

This year’s theme is “A Friendlier World with Air Sports” and students between the ages of 6 and 17 may participate. Entries will be judged in three classes, according to age and at least in part for its creative use of the theme in relation to the aviation world.

When we think of aviation, our first thoughts go to the sky and we begin to imagine the variety of aircraft and activities that can take place. We imagine what it would be like soaring through the air in a glider, floating across the sky in a hot air balloon, or maybe looping through the clouds in an aerobatic plane. While being in the sky is glamorous, it is only part of the adventure. Every journey begins on the ground with a team of people working together to make something magical happen.

Working together, a group of aviation enthusiasts can accomplish what one person alone never could. Air sports bring people together and creates friendships that connect people from all over the world and of all ages. Now it's your turn to grab your favorite art supplies and create a poster that captures the friendlier world that comes from people meeting and sharing their love of sport aviation.

The deadline for Virginia residents to have their art postmarked and sent to the Virginia Department of Aviation (Attn: Art Contest, 5702 Gulfstream Road, Richmond, Virginia 23250-2422)  is January 19, 2021.
