Manassas Partners with Honey Bee Initiative
The City has partnered with George Mason University’s Honey Bee Initiative (HBI) to place an apiary on property maintained by the Manassas Regional Airport. The vacant property is on the south end of the Airport and serves as a buffer for noise and protection for the airport’s approach surfaces. The property cannot be used for any other purpose.
The HBI seeks to educate students and the community about the interdependence of pollinators and human food sources and modeling the best practice methods in the management of honey bee hives. Partnerships with local governments are vital to the success of the initiative. George Mason has placed seven beehives on the property and may move other hives to the location in the spring. This is a trial program for one year, and if it is successful, we expect to continue this partnership in the future.
