Transport Canada Proposes New Drone Rule

Two manned aviation groups are opposing a proposal by Transport Canada that would allow drones weighing up to 1,430 pounds (similar to a Cessna 152) to operate beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS).  The proposal states that drones this size could be flown BVLOS below 400 feet in areas that have a population density of less than 25 people per square kilometer and at least a kilometer away from areas that have a population density equal to or greater than that.  Smaller drones (less than 350 pounds) would be allowed in those same areas but would be allowed above 400 feet.

The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association along with the Ultralight Pilots Association of Canada are opposed to the proposal that is being pushed by the drone industry.
