Hydrogen-powered Aircraft

Long-touted as a sustainable fuel source, hydrogen is gaining attention as a possibility for aviation, and testing is underway to determine its effectiveness as governments and businesses look for ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

An aircraft using hydrogen as its fuel would emit water instead of carbon dioxide.

Early testing suggests that airplanes using hydrogen can be as fast as traditional aircraft, carry in excess of 100 passengers and fly as far as 1,864 miles.  A recent report said such hydrogen-powered aircraft could enter the market by 2035.  Longer-haul flights of more than 4,000 miles would be possible in 2040.
