State Funding Programs for Airports

State aviation funding programs are available through the Virginia Department of Aviation to assist sponsors of public-use airports with a variety of improvement activities.

Virginia Aviation Ambassadors Program

The Virginia Aviation Ambassadors Program is designed to encourage pilots to fly to all of the airports in Virginia as well as visit aviation museums and attend safety seminars. The Virginia Aviation Ambassadors Program provides Bronze, Silver and Gold level recognition for pilots and passengers who visit (fly or drive) our airports and aviation museums, participate in one of our DOAV/FAA Safety programs and attend the Virginia Regional Festival of Flight.

Virginia Aviation Conference

The Virginia Aviation Conference is held the third or fourth week of August each year. It is held in conjunction with a Virginia Aviation Board Meeting and provides an opportunity for the Virginia airport community to meet and discuss topics of common interest.

Aviation Safety Program

The Virginia Department of Aviation Safety Program was enacted in 1981 with the premise that by providing educational seminars for pilots we could effectively prevent accidents.  With this in mind the program has grown over the years with the goal to reach all of the pilots in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  We consistently build upon each years program to fulfill the promise that we will do our very best to eliminate aircraft accidents in Virginia.  In collaboration with other aviation organizations we provide excellent aviation safety topics and create an atmosphere of fun along with learning.

Weather Information Access

As all pilots know, it is vitally important to always receive a thorough weather briefing before every flight. The Commonwealth of Virginia has a strong commitment to make that process as convenient and accurate as possible. Programs have been implemented by the Department to enhance weather information procurement and gathering.

Virginia SATSLab

The Virginia SATSLab, Inc. (VSATS) successfully participated in the Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS) project, and hosted the national demonstration of SATS technologies in Virginia during early June 2005.  VSATS is now refocusing its research capabilities in 2006 by examining new strategic research opportunities as well as seeking out other partners in which to engage work.  VSATS will, through these efforts, continue to examine ways to assist in working toward the goal of smaller aircraft using smaller airports becoming a more vibrant component of the overall aviation system.
